Standing on the bank of the Thames at Wapping, the Prospect of Whitby claims to be London's oldest riverside pub, dating back to 1520. Previously known as the "Devil's Tavern" because of it's dubious reputation, in former times it was the haunt of cut-throats, smugglers and footpads. In the 17th century it was the favoured hostelry of "Hanging" Judge Jeffreys, and a noose hangs by one of the windows commemorating his custom.
